A more hoppy and more bitter variation of the British Brown Ale.  Look for prominent caramel and chocolate, with less bitterness than its cousins the American Pale and Amber Ales.  This beer emerged early in the craft beer story and was originally typified by Pete’s Wicked Ale in 1986.

As the name might suggest, this beer pours a clear, light to dark brown colour,  with a low to medium off white head.  On the nose we find that rich malty aroma of chocolate, toast, caramel, sometimes a bit of a nutty character.  Hops are going to be supportive, usually at a moderate level, although more aggressive versions are out there.  Some esters might be present but are going to live in the background. Upon tasting we’re looking for a flavour rather similar to aroma with that same rich malty chocolate,  toasty, nutty, and  caramely.  Hop flavour often remains lower and bitterness should be medium to medium-high, with esters remaining in the background if present at all.  This is a medium to medium-full bodied beer, with medium carbonation.
