This beer is dark, malty, bitter, roasty, hoppy, chocolaty, and balanced. It can appear quite black in the glass, and the head is full, tan and lasts.. American porter first showed up in the early days of craft beer in America, as an adaptation of the English Porters but with American character. It tends to be stronger, more bitter and a bit roastier than the English versions, but less so than an American Stout.

On first sniff you should find a strong roast and rich malt aroma, almost invariably chocolaty, sometimes with some coffee notes, along with some classic American hop aromas that cover a fairly wide range of intensities. Regardless of the hop aggressiveness, roast is always going to be prominent. Fruity esters are common, but always in the backseat. On The palate, look for the same strong roasted flavour, maybe slightly burnt, and with some chocolate, and a touch of caramel. Hop flavour here is low, usually earthy or resiny, and lends a medium high bitterness to the beer. The body is medium-full with moderate carbonation and should finish with a complicated dry but medium sweetness.
