American Porter’s bigger, stronger sister, or perhaps English Stout’s more abrasive and bolder cousin.  Either way, this is a dark strong, roasty, bitter and hoppy beer, it takes the typical stouts of the Isles and turns up the volume.

The beer pours jet black, very dark brown on occasion, with a big, persistent, tan to light brown head.  Aroma is high with roasty chocolate, and often notes of coffee. Look for a touch of a burnt aroma too. Hops should be there, but  can be low and are often the resinous type.  Some light alcohol and low esters are also part of the deal on occasion, but always in the back.  Flavour should be complementary to the aroma, with fairly high roast, coffee, dark chocolate, and some caramel or chocolate  sweetness. Hop intensity can live in a wide range, but expect to find the classic citrus or resin flavours. With a medium to full body and high carbonation, it leans heavily towards creaminess. Look for medium to high bitterness, in some instances a bit of roasted malt derived astringency, and a medium to dry finish and some light alcohol.
