The modern version of this dark German lager was created in the 1830s by Spaten, after Gabriel Sedlmayr II visited breweries in England and returned with malting techniques that developed into Munich Malt. The beer can be viewed as the darker counterpart to Helles.

Dunkel has a colour range from deep copper all the way to brown, is clear and has a creamy light tan head. Aroma will be of rich malt, boasting toasted bread, chocolate, caramel, and light toffee. Light spicy hops may be in the mix, but are often absent or completely overshadowed by the malt. It’s a medium bodied beer, but some versions can be a little fuller, it is smooth, slightly dextrinous, and has a moderate level of carbonation. Flavour is akin to aroma, with rich malt flavours and low spicy hops.
