Another of the “Healthful” stouts, which of course is a claim no longer permitted, it is dark, roasty and creamy. At one point in time, between WW1 and WW2 this was very popular on British Soil. The style sort of fell out of favour as they tend to do, but was revived alongside the craft beer movement. American versions will be hoppier and more aggressive, as expected.

This beer is dark brown to black and often opaque, with a thick creamy tan head that lasts. Look for roasted grain and coffee aromas, with a light malt backbone. Hop aroma will be in the low to mid range and usually of the earthy floral type. You may find some light fruity esters, and some nutty character from the oats. The flavour of oatmeal stout is a continuation from the aroma, with roasted coffee, earthy, grainy, and low fruitiness. Bitterness will be mid level and the finish will be medium-dry to medium sweet with a roasty aftertaste.
