Dubbels are usually a copper colour, quite clear, with some reddish notes and a big stubborn head. Aroma is dominated by a rich chocolate and burnt sugar malt along with dark dried fruit esters. Raisins and plums being the most common. Some phenols make their way into the mix with a peppery character, while hop aromas are virtually absent. Some soft alcohol on the nose is also quite common. The mouthfeel is that of a medium-full body, with a slight alcohol warmth, and a high level of carbonation. Flavour is analogous to aroma, with bitterness dialing in at medium but allowing the malt to remain in the foreground. The finish is dry but full of those malty and estery flavours.
