Also called Scotch Ale, this is the rich, malty, chewy, warming, big beer of Scotland. Like a Barley Wine but leaning harder on malty caramel and toffee.

The beer pours a clear light copper to brown with some garnet or ruby highlights, and has a large tan coloured head that fades quickly, especially in the higher alcohol versions. A strong toasty malt should hit the nose immediately, along with toffee and caramel. Look for graham cracker, caramelized sugar, and some light butterscotch, followed by some dark dried fruit, light alcohol and extremely low earthy hops. This beer is full bodied, even chewy, with smooth alcohol and medium carbonation. The flavour here is a continuation of aroma, with those bready toasty malt flavours, caramel, toffee, dried fruit esters, low hops and a bit of roast to offset the huge malt in the balance.
