Balance
Amber Ale can be looked at as a more evenly balanced derivative of the American Pale Ale, or alternatively, a more assertive variation of English bitter. Sometimes called red ale, this beer should be noticeably less bitter than APA, and has a caramel character from crystal or caramel malts , that while not always overwhelming, never misses the party. This is a versatile beer and fairly approachable.

Amber Ale pours.. well, amber, with tendencies towards reddish tones. Look for a decent sized, off white head that sticks around. Aroma from this beer should be a moderate caramel maltiness, supported by low to medium hops, often of a citrusy character, and some low fruity esters. On the palate look for a medium full body, with decent carbonation, and that caramel malt flavor often accompanied by a bit of toast. Hops are present, but don’t overshadow the caramel. Balance will vary with examples, but the bitterness should be moderate. Expect the caramel, and hops to linger into the dry finish.
