This pale strong and spicy phenolic Belgian Ale was popularized in the 1930s by Westmalle.  It is very similar to Belgian Golden Strong Ale, but with the emphasis on the phenols as opposed to the esters.

It is generally a yellow or pale amber colour, quite clear and effervescent, and with a big creamy lasting head.  Another complex aromatic mélange of esters phenols, alcohol malt and hops, but the phenols take the foreground with a spicy peppery character.  Esters are low and citrusy, hops are low but floral, and malt is light and grainy.  A light alcohol perfume joins the mix as well.  Medium in body and highly carbonated, the alcohol content can be elusive. The flavour here is in keeping with the aroma, but the bitterness is high and continues into the dry phenolic finish.
