Big, dark, full, and slightly sweet. Originally called a Milk Stout, which it often still is in Canada, but the moniker is no longer permitted in the UK. Also, it was originally marketed as a healthy and nourishing beverage for nursing mothers. This claim is of course no longer allowed either. It is much sweeter than most of the other stout styles, although it is on par with the sweetness of Tropical Stout. Lactose is most often added, hence the milk reference, and as it is unfermentable by yeast, aids to boost the beer’s body and sweetness.

This beer is very dark brown or sometimes black, is quite opaque and has a creamy head, usually tan coloured. The aroma should be of mild roasted grains with some chocolate, and occasionally coffee. Hops will be low and earthy and some low fruity esters, as well as some low buttery diacetyl may be present. A fairly full bodied and creamy beer, with carbonation on the low end of medium. The flavour will be dominated by roasted chocolate, coffee and rounded by the sweetness, think coffee and cream. Bitterness should be moderate here, and again the hops are low and earthy or floral.
